"Ancient, they stand
Kings of stone.
Kings of stories.
Kings of silence."

"Ahh, don't you just feel small and insignificant compared to the universe?"
"Hey, now listen here dude, I got the whole universe in my pocket the size of a BB, and I don't even remember which pocket!"

This is a piece I feel it is important for each viewer to connect with in their own way. Look deeply into the art, and look deeply into yourself.
My inspiration, if you want to know, was a song called When Scars Become Art by Gatton and Brook Young. This song has spoken to me in many different ways over the years.

A song dear to our hearts sung around a campfire overlooking a lake, with dear friends. Those are the moments we remember, the moments we miss. Cherish the friendships and the small moments while you are in them, and remember them with fondness. And always know, that "if you come broken, they'll see that you mend." In our hearts, we "will ever be with them again."
This painting is inspired by that land and those people.

This painting came from my fingers as my soul was on fire about the importance of play. Children need to play, especially in nature. It helps them build healthier and happier bodies, minds, and relationships with peers. I have seen this first hand as I went from working in a public school kindergarten to a nature preschool. I both saw and felt the difference just by looking at the children's faces. And it breaks my heart that so many children are kept indoors at desks for such long periods of time from such young ages, and the small amount of time they are allow "recess" it is on a cemented, fenced in playground, separated from nature. I guess this painting is trying to show the longing children have for play and that we adults in society have stolen that from so many, and it is also trying to show us that there are indeed other, healthier ways that children can gain a well rounded education. Nature and forest schools do indeed exist! Let children be children!

Do you know that feeling of energy deep within while you are cold and still outwardly? I love ice. I love winter. This painting came from that love, but also the feelings of motion; of turmoil perhaps, or just the many aspects of life. In far northern lakes and rivers, when they freeze over, and as they expand, they will crack and made beautiful "singing" kinds of sounds. It is something I long to hear in person. But it has always seemed to me that there is so much complexity, motion, and life in ice. In water. In the seasons changing. All the while things seem still, frozen, and waiting.
I suppose this painting has much to say in its own quiet way, I encourage you to look and listen to how it speaks to you.

The crisp misty morning air pricks at your skin as you walk down the trail, the sight of the lodge nestled among the trees brings a warmth to your heart. The parking lot feels calm and still, yet also alive with the laughter, songs, and service that have echoed there, and will again. Your feet know the way.

"Embrace your womanhood,
Your femineity,
Your pain and power,
Your wisdom and intuition.
Your bones and hormones,
They know the ancient arts.
You are not broken,
It doesn't have to go away,
If you embrace who you are,
Your body and mind
Will work together,
To heal and to create.
You, woman,
Complete and whole,
Through each cycle and phase,
Can breathe and be.
Embrace your light,
Embrace your love."

Is there not something special about a mountain spring? The cold, but refreshing water that comes from a hill or mountainside surely finds its way into our hearts. Water often feels like it has magical properties, and once having bathed, or tasted of such fresh water it is as though there is an unbreakable bond between that place and you.

This painting took me months. It slowly slowly grew out of the canvas, one layer at a time, and it had a lot of waiting time while it decided what it needed next. As I sat looking at the final painting, when I knew in my heart that it was done, I wondered what it was trying to say, and what name to give it. "Each Garden" came to mind. It spoke of the beauty in diversity; that each person, like each garden, grew and continues to grow in different ways, and it is that diversity which what makes our garden of a world so special. We need to nurture these gardens; having empathy and respect for gardens that are different from our own.

At the edge of a lake deep in the forests of Wyoming there sits a small clearing with log benches, a place known as the chapel. A chapel with the forest floor as a rug and the open skies as a ceiling. At the front of the clearing stand an old tree. A beautiful tree. A tree that I believe was struck by lightning at some point, causing the top to break off. Yet, this tree was resilient. It sent a branch out to one side, but when that branch failed to survive, it sent another out to the other side. This branch turned upward to heaven and continues to grow and thrive.
On Sunday mornings when we meet to uplift one another and worship in our own ways, this Preacher Tree stands silent and strong as the sun rises higher into the sky and the loons on the lake know that this is their home.
